An Old Man and his Grandson was a painting by the Italian artist, Ghirlandaio. It was painted with tempera on

wooden panel in 1490. It shows an old smiling at his grandson, who he appears to be holding. It is known for its emotional poignancy, far beyond normal portraits of the time. One noticable feature of the work is the severe deformity of the old man's nose, probably due to a case of rhinophyma. Out of the window, the backdrop appears to be hilly with trees. In 1996, it was heavily restored because of wear, as it was declined by an art museum in Berlin due to its poor condition. It is currently displayed in the Louvre, Paris.
