Mona Lisa is the name of a painting by the Renaissance artist Leonardo Da Vinci. It portrays Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesca del Giocondo, sitting amongst a mountainous backdrop. The Mona Lisa is widely regarded as the best known painting of all time.

The Mona Lisa has had a checkered past when it comes to robberies. The most famous of these is when Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian thief and a caretaker of the Lourve, was found having stolen the Mona Lisa to try and get it into an Italian art gallery. He served 6 months in jail.


The Mona Lisa currently resides in the Lourve, Paris.

In Popular Culture

The Mona Lisa is featured in the 2006 movie The Da Vinci Code, based on the book by Dan Brown. The book was writen in 2003.
